Nettle tea, in short

Nettle tea is a herbal infusion made by steeping the dried leaves of the stinging nettle plant in hot water. Once brewed, the sting disappears, leaving a mild, earthy, caffeine-free drink that is naturally a source of iron, calcium and vitamins A, C and K.

This guide covers what nettle tea is good for, whether it has caffeine, how to brew it well, whether it is safe to drink, and its long tradition. Nettle tea is one of the oldest and best-loved herbal brews around, and it is having a real revival. Here are the questions people ask most about it. For the wider picture, see our natural health and herbal tips guide.

What is nettle tea good for?

Nettle tea is a caffeine-free herbal drink that many people simply enjoy as a nutritious, everyday cup. Nettles are naturally a source of iron, calcium and vitamins A, C and K, which is part of why the plant has been used as a food and drink ingredient for centuries. Most people drink it for the earthy taste and the simple pleasure of a warm, natural brew.

Does nettle tea contain caffeine?

No. Nettle tea is naturally caffeine-free. It is a herbal infusion rather than a true tea from the Camellia sinensis plant, so it contains no caffeine at all. That makes it an easy choice at any time of day, morning or evening.

UK-made colloidal silver, from £16.95

Most colloidal silver uses water purified once, if at all. We use two stages — reverse osmosis, then distillation — then bottle in dark glass. 10, 100 and 200 ppm, in dropper, spray or 500ml refill.

How do you make nettle tea?

Steep a handful of fresh nettle leaves, or a nettle tea bag, in freshly boiled water for about five minutes. A simple method:
  • Add your nettle — a handful of fresh leaves, or one nettle tea bag, into a mug.
  • Pour over boiling water — freshly boiled is best.
  • Steep — leave for around five minutes.
  • Strain and enjoy — strain if using fresh leaves, then drink as it is or with a little honey or lemon.

Is nettle tea safe to drink?

For most healthy adults, a cup or two of nettle tea a day is fine to enjoy. Drying or brewing removes the sting entirely, so the tea itself is pleasant and easy to drink. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, it is always sensible to check with your GP or pharmacist first.

Has nettle been used traditionally?

Yes – nettle has a long and respected history in traditional herbal practice across the UK and beyond. Generations have grown it, cooked with it and brewed it into drinks, and that heritage is a big part of its appeal today. It remains a plant people enjoy exploring, both in the kitchen and in the teapot – and a good one to read more about if it interests you.
